While many of the favorite shows on BritBox are dark and bleak crime dramas, one mystery series makes its much-anticipated return that proves there can also be humor and charm in murder mysteries. Father Brown is a series set in a small English village in the 1950s where a Roman Catholic priest (Mark Williams) resides and serves as the resident sleuth. He investigates various crimes in the area.
Father Brown makes for a fun and unique protagonist who differs from the typical hardened detectives in stories like these. He is a flawed man in many ways, but he is also very likable, even in the face of some darker moments. The period aspect of post-World War II Britain is also a great aspect of this case-of-the-week, which continues on its long television legacy with the arrival of its twelfth season.

Whiskey On The Rocks – New Series
Available January 22 On Hulu
While there are a lot of shows based on true stories, Whiskey on the Rocks takes an interesting approach to a little-known moment in history that nearly ignited a nuclear war. The series is a comedic look at an instance during the height of the Cold War when a Russian submarine was mistakenly in Swedish waters during a routine exercise and ran aground. What resulted was a tense standoff that lasted days and nearly ended the world, according to this humorous take.
There is a lot of fun to be had in looking at these real-life characters and a real-life incident from years later and pointing out how ridiculous it all was. The balance of the real political world with the outrageous comedy feels similar to the work of Armando Iannucci (Veep, Death of Stalin). The six-episode miniseries was made available on Hulu on January 22.
