Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 has been difficult for the entirety of the crew, but Captain Glenn Shephard’s red flags and overall behavior have proven that he should be fired from the series. As an original cast member of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and the Captain of Parsifal III both on and off the show, Captain Glenn is a unique member of the Below Deck franchise. When Below Deck Sailing Yacht first hit the airwaves in 2020, many were excited about the addition of a sailing yacht to the fleet of Below Deck franchise vessels, lauding Captain Glenn’s expertise.
Captain Glenn hasn’t been one of the most exciting Below Deck captains, but his expertise within the industry has been interesting to watch on screen. While he’s not as charismatic as Captain Kerry Titheradge or Captain Jason Chambers, and not as openly seasoned as Captain Sandy Yawn or former Captain Lee Rosbach, Captain Glenn has made a mark on the franchise for better or worse. His time aboard Parsifal III as Below Deck Sailing Yacht’s Captain has endeared him to some and pushed him away from others. Captain Glenn’s behavior on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 has been sub-par.
While Captain Glenn isn’t necessarily causing issues with the rest of the crew, there have been some red flags surrounding his performance on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. Glenn is typically one of the more hands-off captains in the franchise, but his lack of care or concern for the crew and the difficulties they’ve been facing throughout the current season has been surprising. Captain Glenn has spent the majority of the season off-screen, and the moments he’s been on the series have mostly been to conduct preference or tip meetings rather than stepping in when the crew needs him.
Though Glenn has a past with Below Deck and likely hopes to continue as one of the Captains in the franchise, his affiliations with problematic cast members like Gary King have pushed viewers away from supporting him. While he’s been able to make friends with the rest of the Captains in the franchise and is typically one of the more agreeable captains in general, Glenn’s low-key presence has hurt him in the long run with Below Deck viewers. Many want to see Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 be Captain Glenn’s final season with the popular franchise.
8 Captain Glenn Favors Gary King On BDSY Despite His Bad Behavior
He Doesn’t See Issues With Gary
Although Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 has seen less of Gary than ever before, there’s been a purpose for the lack of the First Officer being on screen. Gary’s past behavior was revealed between Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 and season 5 and was difficult for viewers to hear about. The reveal of his behavior and his defense of himself made it clear Gary shouldn’t be part of the cast anymore. When it was revealed that Gary had been accused of sexual misconduct by a Below Deck franchise makeup artist, many thought his time on Parsifal III was over.

While Captain Glenn and the rest of the cast of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 hasn’t commented on the allegations against Gary or his behavior in general, it’s clear that some support Gary while others don’t. Captain Glenn has been openly supportive of Gary, who works with him outside of Below Deck as well as on the show, seemingly excusing his behavior and ignoring the allegations. Captain Glenn’s favoritism with Gary has always been obvious but is more apparent with the onset of Gary’s poor behavior in the last year.
7 Captain Glenn Was To Harsh On Chef Cloyce During The First Dinner
He Was Too Tough On The Young Chef
Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, many have been critical of Chef Cloyce Martin. The chef is a new addition to the Parsifal III’s crew, and while Cloyce may have his issues, it’s been clear that he’s been giving some great effort into making a name for himself in the yachting industry. While some have struggled with Cloyce, even accusing the Below Deck Sailing Yacht chef of being a producer plant, it’s been clear that Chef Cloyce is doing his best and working hard to be the type of chef who could return to Parsifal III.
During the early days of the season, Captains are usually a bit softer with their crew as they get adjusted to their time aboard the vessel. Serving guests well and staying safe is always the top priority, but Captains tend to cut their crew slack when it comes to getting started for the charter season. Unfortunately, Captain Glenn wasn’t interested in being forgiving with Chef Cloyce during the early charters, and was incredibly harsh with the chef about his performance during the first dinner. Captain Glenn set a tone with Chef Cloyce, and hasn’t been able to repair their rapport.
6 Captain Glenn Has Been Hard On Daisy Kelliher
He’s Protecting Gary & Throwing Daisy To The Wolves
Although Captain Glenn tends to be more hands-off with the crew, he’s had a few moments throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 that make it clear he’s looking for more control over their performance. Daisy Kelliher, who’s been working aboard Parsifal III since Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 2 as Chief Stew, has been having a harder time than usual throughout the charter season with her stews. Daisy, who went through a breakup between the last seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht with former Chief Engineer Colin Macrae, hasn’t had it easy this season personally or professionally.
While Daisy has been causing some disruption aboard Parsifal III, it’s been clear that Captain Glenn isn’t interested in cutting her any slack when it comes to her performance. Despite Daisy having been part of Captain Glenn’s crew for years, he isn’t being easy on her throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. While Glenn is being softer with Gary, he’s choosing to throw Daisy to the wolves any time she has issues with her performance aboard Parsifal III.
5 Captain Glenn Doesn’t Add Much To The Show
He’s A Boring Captain
Typically, the Below Deck Captains bring an interesting sense of authority to whatever series they’re on. While the role isn’t easy, Below Deck Captains work hard to set the tone of their crew, showing them how to behave and perform, and making it clear what they’re allowed to get away with throughout the charter season. Though some captains have an easier time than others because of the abilities of their crew, most have to navigate trick managerial issues while guiding the vessel safely through difficult waters. Some are more dynamic than others, but the captains always play an integral role.
Captain Glenn may be an important part of the crew, but he isn’t the most interesting of captains in the franchise. Though Captain Glenn has spent years with Below Deck Sailing Yacht, viewers don’t know much about him outside of his performance in the series. Captain Glenn keeps to himself and doesn’t rock the boat often with his opinions, making him one of the more uninteresting captains in the franchise.
4 Captain Glenn Doesn’t Have Witty One Liners Like Captain Lee
He Doesn’t Bring The Charm
As the original Below Deck Captain of the franchise, Captain Lee has always set the standard that Below Deck viewers hold other captains to. While nobody else can be Captain Lee, it’s clear that other Below Deck captains have been able to understand how to make their personalities shine through the lens of the series. Captain Lee is known for his one-liners, as well as his particularly casual brand of management until things got tough. While he wasn’t always hands-on, Captain Lee had a pulse on what was happening with his crew at all times.
Captain Glenn doesn’t shine in the same way Captain Lee does, especially when it comes to his sense of humor. While Captain Glenn is sometimes indirectly or unintentionally funny, he doesn’t have the pithy one-liners that viewers see with Captain Lee. His lack of sense of humor and the inability to find a niche for himself is an issue for Captain Glenn, and makes him harder to relate to than other Below Deck captains.
3 Captain Glenn Doesn’t Get Involve With The Crew Like Captain Sandy
He Isn’t Hands-On
Captain Sandy, who’s been part of Below Deck Mediterranean since its early days, has always been one of the more difficult captains for viewers to get behind. While Captain Sandy is a wonderful superyacht captain, her personality isn’t for everyone. In previous seasons, viewers and crew members alike have called her style micromanagement and feel that she’s too hands-on with her crew throughout the charter season. Even so, seeing how involved with her crew Captain Sandy can be is refreshing after watching Captain Glenn.
Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, Captain Glenn has barely shown up for the crew outside of being difficult toward Cloyce and Daisy. His hands-off approach makes it clear that he’s not always someone that the crew feels comfortable going to with their issues. Despite Captain Glenn being approachable in nature, the fact that his crew doesn’t always want to turn to him in times of trouble makes it clear that he’s not involved enough with the charter season’s problems.
2 Captain Glenn Isn’t A Viewer Favorite Like Captain Jason
Below Deck Viewers Wouldn’t Miss Him
Although Below Deck viewers can be specific about what they want to see from their captains and crew members, when they latch onto a personality, it’s clear that person has something great to offer. Throughout Below Deck history, the Captains have traditionally been older and less involved with the crews, but when Below Deck Down Under debuted in 2022, viewers were introduced to Captain Jason and found a new obsession. Gorgeous and generous, Captain Jason was a relatable captain who many felt should be the face of the Below Deck franchise.
While not every captain can or should be as magnetic as Captain Jason, his status as a beloved Below Deck captain makes him far more interesting to viewers. His magnetic personality and interesting management style have brought him a sense of security with Below Deck Down Under, because viewers are often begging for his return to their screens. While Captain Glenn is good at his job, he’s not quite as charismatic as Captain Jason, and hasn’t had the same pull with Below Deck viewers in his years with the franchise.
1 Captain Glenn Has Been Defensive About Criticism
He Can’t Take Valid Feedback
While Captain Glenn has been a major part of Below Deck Sailing Yacht through the years, he’s had a hard time with the world of reality TV infiltrating the yachting industry. Captain Glenn conducts himself and his crew in a specific way that works for him, and it’s clear that isn’t always something that translates on screen. Captain Glenn has been successful in his time aboard Parsifal III, but that isn’t something viewers are always able to understand in the way he wants them to.
When viewers have been critical of Captain Glenn in the past, it’s been clear that he doesn’t appreciate the criticism from people who aren’t in the industry or haven’t had his same level of experience. While some are simply trying to offer help in improving his time aboard Parsifal III for his next charter season. The Below Deck Sailing Yacht captain isn’t always open to criticism and often gets defensive about the feedback he gets from viewers who are trying to help him improve.
