Summary

  • Robby Keene is a skilled fighter with a chip on his shoulder, poised to finally claim the championship title.
  • Sam LaRusso, the conflicted female captain, has a chance to showcase her skills and face off against Tory at the Sekai Taikai.
  • Tory Nichols, with a troubled past and pent-up rage, must control her emotions to secure a victory in the upcoming competition.

As Cobra Kai rapidly races towards the series finale, the competition is heating up, but only four characters appear to be serious contenders for the Sekai Taikai title. Cobra Kai is the sequel series to the classic 1980s and 1990s movies, The Karate Kid. The show picks up several decades after the final installment of The Karate Kid, with both Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence seeking to go back to their roots. The show became incredibly successful on Netflix, and has continued to stream from 2018, when the first season dropped to now, with six seasons of the series.

However, while the old rivalry between Daniel and Johnny may be an entertaining and compelling drama, the show has shifted a lot of focus and attention onto the new kids as they go through some teenage struggles of their own. And as the show moves into the series finale, the kids are about to embark on their greatest challenge yet, with the prestigious Sekai Taikai. However, the show has set things up in a way that it now feels like there are only four good options for who can take home the title from the incredible challenge.

Should a Cobra Kai college spinoff happen after season 6?

Netflix’s Cobra Kai is coming to an end with season 6, though the creators and stars have all teased their ideas for potential spinoffs to the Karate Kid show, one of the most discussed being a college-set show with the younger cast. Though season 6 is building towards meaningful closures to the characters’ arcs, I would like to see their college years, particularly as college can see people go through a variety of changes beyond high school, and it would be interesting to see how the younger stars evolve further.

Robby Keene

First, there is Robby Keene. Robby is the son of Johnny Lawrence, though he spent many years estranged from his father, who appeared to keep his distance from his child before the visits stopped altogether. Robby has learned a lot throughout the show, and despite his early attempts to push people and students around and away from him, Robby has served his time, and made the choices that brought him back to Miyagi-Do. Robby also has an impressive track record and remains one of the most skilled fighters in the show.

Robby initially began his training under Daniel LaRusso, and proved he had a natural talent and aptitude for Miyagi-Do. However, his intentions were murky, as he wanted to get back at his father for his apparent betrayal at connecting with and training Miguel Diaz. Robby was quickly accepted into the LaRusso’s home, where he got close to Sam, and he continued to refine his karate skills. However, with his hot-headed nature, Robby was prone to getting frustrated and making rash choices. But, when he centers himself, he is an extremely diligent and intelligent fighter.

Although he has competed in every All-Valley tournament throughout the show, Robby has never taken the title of All-Valley Champion. In his first year, Robby came close, but was ultimately defeated by Miguel. Then, in another All-Valley tournament, he narrowly lost to Hawk, due to his loss of focus over his friend Kenny. This puts him in an extremely strong position to finally lay claim to the title, since his losses have fueled his passion and dedication further. He is also the Miyagi-Do male captain in the Sekai Taikai, and the most skilled fighter across multiple disciplines.

With Robby’s experience fighting in the streets, prison, and also with the Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai dojos, he is by far the most versatile fighter. He has passion, a desire to make a name for himself, and enough speed and intelligence to execute on his fights as long as he stays focused. It would also mean a lot to continue his father’s legacy, and finally lay claim to the championship title that Johnny spent years struggling to get, only for LaRusso to come in and take him down after a few weeks of training.

Cobra Kai Is Setting Up The Perfect Ending For Johnny Lawrence

Cobra Kai season 6, part 1, has laid the groundwork for Johnny Lawrence’s ending, and its poetic link to the Karate Kid formula makes it perfect.

3

Sam LaRusso

Sam LaRusso began the series as a popular girl with a good heart. While her friends were doing things that they shouldn’t be as young teens, Sam was a daddy’s girl, and she was keen to stay within the lines. However, Sam found a rebellious spirit that led her to begin training alongside Robby in Miyagi-Do. Arguably, Sam picked up on Miyagi-Do quicker than Robby, and later, when she was pushed to learn under sensei Lawrence, she showed incredible bravery and strength.

Sam is one of the more conflicted characters who has often found herself struggling to fit in. Despite having lots of friends, Sam has been the odd one out on several occasions. And as a result of trying to push herself and impress her friends, Sam began to behave erratically. At the same time, she began dating Miguel, and her good friend Robby began to develop a crush on her. With so much happening for young Sam, she got overwhelmed, and struggled to keep everything in balance.

This theme of balance, however, returned again and again in her life, and her practice of karate day to day. Sam was caught in the middle of a love triangle with Robby and Miguel, but eventually she broke things off with Miguel, and began a long-term rivalry with his new girlfriend, Tory. Both Sam and Tory are occasionally jealous, possessive, and hot-headed, which led to their feud, but Sam suffered intense anxiety after Tory and the Cobra Kai students broke into her home.

Now, Sam has been crowned as the Miyagi-Do female captain, and she has a chance to prove her skills at the Sekai Taikai. Sam has proven her skills in several street fights, but she has yet to win a competition like the All-Valley. However, Sensei Terry Silver was bribing the referee who awarded Tory the All-Valley championship win, which means if it had been a fair fight, Sam might have won. And it’s all but guaranteed that she will be facing off against Tory once again.

Cobra Kai has had plenty of romances over the course of its five seasons. Some have been quite good, while others leave much to be desired.

2

Tory Nichols

Tory may be a kid, but she was forced to grow up fast when her mother got ill. Tory works hard at low-paying jobs to pay for bills and groceries. She also finds time to study, practice karate to get her aggression out, and date boys. However, Tory began her karate career at Cobra Kai and her skills were nurtured in a “Strike First, Strike Hard, No Mercy” kind of environment. Despite this, the Cobra Kai mantra has always been flawed, and Tory took it to extremes on occasion, while letting things slide completely on others.

Tory has struggled to make friends and trust people. When she got close to Miguel, he eventually left her for Sam. In addition, while dating Robby, Tory believed that he was putting other people, like Sam, ahead of her. All of this led to Tory having a lot of pent-up rage, which makes her a powerful and aggressive fighter. However, in Cobra Kai season 6, part 1, Tory lost her mother, and it really shook up her whole world.

Desperate to still compete, Tory kept the news to herself, and took on Sam LaRusso for the title of female captain for their team. However, due to concerns from the LaRusso’s, the match between Tory and Sam was called off. Unfortunately, this was another tipping point for Tory that pushed her to find Kreese, and join Cobra Kai once again. Tory has a lot of pain and frustration, which leads her to make rash decisions that can occasionally endanger peoples’ lives.

Now that Tory is back at home in Cobra Kai, she earned the top spot as the women’s captain for the team. There is no denying how skilled Tory is, but if she can’t get her emotions in check, it’s highly unlikely she will be able to win her fight. Tory also has a lot to prove, and everything to gain from winning. If she is able to win fairly, on her own terms, she would be one of the greats. But, many of her biggest issues stem from not being prepared enough, so she will need to keep an eye on that.

Cobra Kai Season 6 Part 1’s Major Tory Twist Reflected On By Hawk Actor: “This Is F—-ng Brutal”

Exclusive: Hawk actor Jacob Bertrand reflects on Cobra Kai season 6 part 1’s major Tory twist and what it means for Miyagi-Do in part 2.

1

Kwon Jae-Sung

Kwon hails from the birthplace of Cobra Kai karate, where Kreese himself was trained to become a warrior, and a fighter. He is also one of the most recent additions to the show, only having appeared in the final season. However, his sparring skills make him elite. Despite another student in the dojo being treated as top of the class, Kreese saw a lot of himself in Kwon while watching him practice.

Kwon has also wronged people and feels little or no remorse for his action. With this attitude, and his willingness not to hold back and cause serious injuries, Kwon is Kreese’ star pupil of choice for Cobra Kai. Kwon may be a newcomer, but he should not be underestimated as his fighting skills and his violent tendencies make him a real dangerous threat. However, Kreese has appointed Kwon as the male captain for Cobra Kai in the Sekai Taikai.

While there isn’t much to go on in terms of live world experience, Kwon does seem to be one of the most formidable and aggressive fighters in the series. All of this added up, it appears that Kwon will strive to follow Kreese’s orders and put Cobra Kai back on top. Kwon will likely become the face of Cobra Kai, and put up a solid effort in the Sekai Taikai, but if the show is going to be true to its core cast, one of the others is more deserving of the win.

Ultimately, however skilled and fast Kwon is, his story is just beginning, while people like Robby, Sam, and Tory have been working hard since day one to gain people’s love and respect. Kwon will no doubt put up a great fight, and likely compete head-to-head with Robby, but when it gets down to the results, Robby is starting with a chip on his shoulder, but Kwon could have more in common than he’d like to admit, considering his constant pent-up aggression. But who will come out victorious in Cobra Kai’s final season remains to be seen.
