Waterloo Road is back for another series, and boy is it set to keep us on ourtoes!

The school-based drama is returning for its 14th series with some huge changes, but one thing that is set to stay the same is the level of drama audiences can expect.

At the end of last series, we said goodbye to another wave of students as they headed off to further education, as well as show icon Kim Campbell (Angela Griffin), who left her role as head of Waterloo Road.

We were also left wondering what would become of Coral Walker (Rachel Leskovac) and Neil Guthrie’s (Neil Fitzmaurice) relationship, and were left reeling by the shock of Nicky Walters (Kym Marsh) being hit by a car.

The new series is set to start with a bang, and the cast are just as enthusiastic about the return as viewers will be.

This series, comedian Jason Manford is set to join the cast as new headteacher Steve Savage, who is set to be, ‘one of the most memorable headteachers at Waterloo Road,’ Jason promises.

Waterloo Road is hugely popular among viewers, and is best known for tackling important issues and heavy topics.

‘It has so much heart and it covers so many important subjects all at once,’ actress Kym Marsh, who plays canteen manager Nicky Walters said. ‘When I first went into it, it was all about the fall-out of Covid, the cost-of-living crisis.

‘We saw racism, we saw knife crime, we saw people dealing with their sexuality. It tackles so many important real-life subjects and issues that people are actually going through, as well as comedy.’

As always, the BBC drama will continue to tackle topical issues in this series, from women’s health to family deaths, bullying to becoming an academy – with a love triangle thrown in for good measure.

‘There’s a lot of topics that we cover that can educate people while being entertained,’ Tillie Amartey, who plays student Stace Neville, told us.

‘Shedding light on being bullied, shedding light on women’s health. Things that go on in normal mainstream schools that aren’t necessarily always talked about, they’re just going through it.

‘But we shed light on that so maybe someone that’s going through it can connect with it. That’s what Waterloo Road is about.’

So, without further ado – here is what you can expect from the next series of Waterloo Road. Strap yourselves in, because it’s a gooden!

A brand new school

Last series saw Kim Campbell make the decision for Waterloo Road to become an academy – a controversial decision among the staff.

This series, the effects of this decision are clear from the outset, starting with a brand new school building. That’s right, Waterloo Road has moved.

It’s all change at Waterloo Road (Picture: BBC)

‘It looks fresher and cleaner and newer,’ Valerie Chambers actress Shauna Shim revealed. ‘The old building was literally an old school, so it was kind of falling down. It was very tired, and it looked a bit Victorian on-screen also, intentionally. This one is very different.’

While the new building looks fantastic on-screen, filming in a school came with challenges for the cast and crew.

‘One of the issues is heat. I’ve banged on about this so much, but it is so warm! It’s a glass-fronted building mostly. It sounds like champagne problems, doesn’t it? But it genuinely is bloody warm,’ Joe Casey actor James Baxter laughed.

A new headteacher

It’s all change in the leadership department at Waterloo Road, with Kim Campbell having stepped down from her role to pursue a career in the academy trust.

‘There was a certain amount of grieving for losing Angela [Griffin] because she was definitely the heart of the show,’ actress Rachel Leskovac, who plays Coral Walker, said. ‘But it’s always exciting and it changes the dynamics of everything, so it keeps it fresh as well.’

Steve makes his presence felt (Picture: BBC)

With Kim’s departure comes the need for a brand new head, and who better to fill the role than Steve Savage, played by none other than Jason Manford?

‘Steve is a bit of a Super Head. He’s the headteacher who goes in and gets schools out of special measures,’ Jason explained. ‘I think he’s the sort of head teacher you want at your kids’ school, because he’s not bothered about red tape and he’s not bothered about the rules.

‘He’s got all those plus points, but at the same time, there’s only so many times you can push the boundaries before you push it too much…’

A dark storyline for Steve

As well as being headteacher of Waterloo Road, Steve is also dad to Billy Savage (Olly Rhodes), who becomes a pupil at the school this series.

‘[Steve] brings his son, Billy, into the school,’ Jason explained.

‘That’s really where it starts to come undone. Can you imagine what that must be like? Not only have you come from a posh school to Waterloo Road, but your dad’s the headteacher. It doesn’t go well for poor Billy.’

The cast have teased a dark storyline ahead for Steve and Billy, in which viewers are set to see a totally different type of role for comedian Jason.

‘I think what’s interesting about the questions that the show asks is that we all say “I would do anything for my children.” I joke to my girls that even if you did something horrendous, you could ring me and I’ll bring the spade! I’m there, I’ll back you up no matter what. And what this series asks is, “Would you? Would you actually?”‘ Jason teased.

Fellow cast member Thapelo Ray, who plays student Dwayne Jackson in the show, added: ‘Even though he’s such a comedian and will keep everyone laughing the whole time, [Jason] has some really heavy stuff to do! It’s really surprising how he goes from such a comedic actor to pretty serious. He’s serious in this season. You’ll see a new side to him that you probably haven’t seen on screen.’

An ‘intriguing’ love triangle

Steve is keeping himself very busy this series, as he also finds himself embroiled in a love triangle with beloved couple Nicky Walters and Donte Charles (Adam Thomas).

It soon becomes clear that Steve has a history with Kym Marsh’s character, Nicky, with Jason explaining that they were each other’s first loves, though things came to a swift end and they haven’t seen each other since.

‘It’s great because Nicky, from the previous series, has a lovely relationship with Donte and I think the fans of the show are behind that and really like that,’ Jason enthused.

Kym added: ‘Nicky and Steve go way back, so how that relationship will impact on her and Donte’s relationship is obviously in question. It’s a bit intriguing!’

Emotions run high (Picture: BBC)

‘There’s a lot of conflict in the relationship that Steve Savage brings to Nicky and Donte, so it’s pretty difficult’ Adam Thomas revealed. ‘It was a really fun storyline to play. Getting to work with Kym and Jason was brilliant.’ He added.

What’s more, Donte and Steve find themselves in a very tense situation during this series, as Adam teased.

‘Donte is put in a very sticky situation. Steve tells Donte something and Donte doesn’t know what to do. He wants to do what’s best for Steve but also he needs to do what’s right. So, it’s very difficult. The situation that Donte gets into is very conflicted.’

A new career for Donte

Donte also gets the opportunity to broaden his horizons this series, when Steve offers him a teaching job.

‘Donte has been given an opportunity to step up from caretaker to teacher, which is a huge opportunity for him. He’s grabbing it with both hands and is trying to do the best job he can do,’ Adam told us.

However, it’s not all good news, as Donte soon begins to suspect that Steve has an ulterior motive, as Adam explained.

‘[Steve] gives my character the opportunity to become a teacher, but he later finds out the reason why, and I think it’s because there’s clearly a thing going on between Steve and Nicky, and Donte gets very jealous over this, especially when he confronts Nicky about the whole situation and she doesn’t tell him that they’ve known each other or even gone out together before.

‘So, there’s lies being told and his head’s in a bit of a mess. He doesn’t know what to believe or who to believe, and now he thinks that Steve is giving him this opportunity because he wants to get closer to Nicky. So, it’s all up in the air for Donte at this time, and he’s a little bit jealous and not too sure what’s going on.’

A new side to Coral

In the last series, Coral and Neil grew close, and we were left wondering if their relationship would go the distance. Well, Rachel Leskovac has some good news…

‘As we left off in series 13, it was will they or won’t they stay together? But he does in fact take her to the garden centre because he’s got the vouchers for the free coffee, but she insists on a slice of cake as well, and that’s what did it.’

Almost as soon as the new series begins however, their relationship is tested when a new job opportunity comes along.

‘There is an opening for a deputy head role and, to me, it seems absolutely natural that Coral would easily slip into those shoes because she’s super organised, above everything else, which you need to be, and is able to juggle lots of plates at one time.

‘So, she goes into the staff room in the morning very smug. She thinks she’s the only person that’s applied for it, so even better, give me the badge! But she soon discovers that Neil has actually gone in for it as well and hasn’t told her!

‘This is a real blow for Coral. She feels betrayed by him, and why on earth would he put himself in the mix, knowing how much it would mean to her?

‘So, because of that there is a conflict between them, and she is fuming with him in the way only Coral can be, and he definitely knows about it. He’s like a dog with his tail between his legs.

‘It’s like a competition then for her, so there’s some really funny scenes from them, because they have to adjudicate each other and so on. Whether or not she’s successful I don’t think I can say, but it’s a really good ep, seeing what will happen and who will get the job!’

Rachel has also teased that viewers will start to see a new side to Coral, during a new storyline.

‘We will get to see quite a different side to Coral in that series particularly because there is a storyline in which we have a lot of deaf students come into the school and my character in particular is quite involved in that. It’s the first time I’ve ever worked with deaf actors and it was absolutely incredible.

‘It really draws out a different side to her and I really loved playing that. She’s still a pain in the bum and likes things done properly, but for me that was the biggest highlight of that series.’

A health scare for Tonya

Tonya Walters (Summer Violet Bird) is at the centre of a big storyline this series, when she starts having health issues.

‘Tonya gets some information that she doesn’t necessarily expect,’ Summer explained. ‘Nobody believes Tonya, and she’s dismissed throughout her pain. When it gets to the realisation that there’s actually something wrong, the tables turn completely.’

Unfortunately, mum Nicky is one of the people who pushes Tonya’s concerns aside.

‘I think at first Nicky’s quite blasé about it because she kind of thinks that Tonya is being dramatic and is perhaps just trying it on for a day off or whatever it is,’ Kym revealed.

‘She isn’t necessarily as supportive as she should be in the beginning, but eventually when things get worse and worse and we get further into that, Nicky does the thing that she always tries to do and goes into full protect mode.’

‘I think what will be nice in this scenario is we’ll see a little bit of a journey with Nicky and Tonya and you do see much more of their relationship and the support and the love there that maybe we haven’t explored in other series.’

Actress Summer is also hopeful that her storyline will resonate with viewers.

‘There’s a lot of things through this storyline that will affect young girls in the audience as viewers, and hopefully it will flag up certain things in their own lives that makes them think, “that’s happening to me”, that they can relate to, in terms of some women’s problems.

‘I’m excited for young girls and even older women to see and think, “I can relate to that,” and get themselves checked out.

A family death

At the beginning of the new series, the Walters and Rafferty family are rocked by a sudden, heartbreaking death – something that has long-lasting affects throughout the rest of the series.

‘I think you see much more of the dynamic of the Raffertys and the Walters,’ Kym teased. ‘You definitely get to know them as a family more, and we enjoyed that as well, exploring all that dynamic.’

‘Whenever there’s a death within the family it’s always a huge thing,’ Alicia Forde, who plays Kelly-Jo Rafferty, explained. ‘In past series, we know that they’re cousins, but you don’t always see how close they can be. Now, we’re starting to see them having each other’s backs a little bit more.

‘I think that comes with getting a bit older as well, and we see the characters go more on this journey of all of them are experiencing a lot of different things, but as a family you’ve got to come together when something happens, so it’s a lot more of a family bond.’

Noah Valentine, who plays Preston Walters, added: ‘We see much more of the family dynamic, especially at the start. Even with Donte coming into the family, he’s part of the family. He’s not been in with us all his life, he’s kind of joining on. You see how he slots into the puzzle, which is nice. It was nice to do all the scenes together.’

‘Certain characters deal with grief in their own ways, so there’s a little bit of sadness, anger, happiness and how each individual deals with it shows what the characters are like.’ Summer revealed.
