Gleisi criticizes statements by Picchetti, appointed by Lula to the BC

In a meeting with investors in Washington, the director of the Central Bank stated that ‘there are clear reasons’ to start a cycle of rising interest rates in Brazil, and received criticism from the president of the PT

BRASÍLIA – The president of the PT, federal deputy Hoffmann’s blues (PR), criticized on social media statements made by the director of International Affairs and Corporate Risk Management at Banco Central, Paulo Picchettiin meetings with investors on Wednesday, 23, in Washington, United States. He was appointed to the position by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“How can a BC director, professor Paulo Pichetti, declare, in a meeting with an investment company, that ‘there are clear reasons’ to start a cycle of rising interest rates in the country?”, wrote Gleisi, on X (formerly Twitter) . “He was not in an academic activity to defend his theses, which by the way are wrong.”

On Wednesday, 23, Picchetti participated in a meeting with investors organized by XP Investimentos, in Washington. During his presentation, he mentioned “clear reasons” why the Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) decided to increase interest rates again, mentioning the various uncertainties in the scenario.

Gleisi criticized what he considered, in Picchetti’s speech, a sanction for speculation. “He is part of the monetary authority, has a seat on the Copom and should have more responsibility, because his speech signals a spike in speculation. Members of the BC should not go around talking,” wrote the PT president.
